Paul Merson blames Unai Emery for the collapse against Watford but has also taken aim at Arsenals pathetic players.

Arsenal appeared to be cruising towards a third Premier League win of the season on Sunday when a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang brace put Emerys side two goals up at Vicarage Road.

Leading 2-0, the visitors were in complete control at half-time but lost control of proceedings when Tom Cleverley halved the deficit shortly after the break.

Watford fired 31 shots – a club-record for a Premier League fixture – and Arsenals shaky defence was finally breached again when Roberto Pereyra scored a late penalty to secure a draw.

Reflecting the match, Merson told Sky Sports : Ive got to put it on the manager. People will say there were experienced players on the pitch, but hes the manager and theyre paid to listen to him.

You cant have a manager give instructions on how to play and then they go out and do their own thing. There would be mutiny, so theyre listening to him and hes not getting it right.

His substitutions werent right. They needed to keep the ball in that game but they kept giving it away cheaply. The only player who didnt give the ball away all game was Mesut Ozil.

You just knew that Arsenal needed to score another goal but he was bringing youngsters on in a game when youre under pressure.

Gunners hero Merson added: Since this new rule started when they can pass the ball in the six-yard box, why have they all started doing that? No one did it last year, and now theyre all doing it.

The manager should have seen that and got the message out onto the pitch to stop that and get the ball forward. If they dont win the first ball, they can win the second ball, and go from there.

If Watford did win the ball in their own half, they have to come through three-quarters of the pitch to score. What are they trying to do?

Sometimes these players think theyre something special and wont be closed down – its pathetic.

At Watford in the first half, it was a walk in the park for Arsenal, theyre 2-0 up and youre thinking its the end of the football match. But I dont know many other teams where the next minute, youre hanging on.

Merson was particularly surprised and annoyed by Emerys decision to remove Ozil and says divisive defender Sokratis cant play.

Watford had been beaten 3-1 at home to West Ham and 3-0 at home to Brighton, he said.
