Frank Lampard appears to have handed Danny Drinkwater a career lifeline at Chelsea by starting the midfielder in his first game in charge against League of Ireland side Bohemians.

The 29-year-old was ostracised from the Chelsea first-team squad under Lampards predecessor Maurizio Sarri, failing to make a single appearance in the Premier League or Europa League under the Italian.

Drinkwaters only appearance for the Blues last season came during Chelseas 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Community Shield 11 months ago in Sarris first game in charge.

The England international cost the Blues £40m when he signed from Leicester City in 2017 but he has made only 23 appearances for the club across two seasons.

However, he has been given an opportunity to show what he can do in Lampards first game in what is an experimental line-up from the former Derby County manager.

As well as Drinkwater, Kenedy and Michy Batshuayi both start for Chelsea following their respective loan spells with Newcastle United and Crystal Palace last term.
