This list, featuring Pele, Diego Maradona and Zinedine Zidane, looks at the greatest moments from the most iconic footballers – from great goal scorers and majestic defenders to sensational scoundrels and those who just didnt know the rules.

54) Johan Neeskens: Netherlands, midfielder (1974, 1978)

Lieutenant to Johan Cruyff at the 1974 World Cup, Neeskens scored five goals, including a penalty in the final. Of course, Holland lost that final (its what they do) to a dogged German side. Four years later, without Cruyff, a deeper-lying Neeskens turned general. He inspired the Dutch to the final once more and another heartbreaking defeat to the hosts – this time Argentina.
