Manchester City FC transfer news: Dean Saunders says John Stones mistakes could lead to Etihad exit

Stones started the season brilliantly but has tailed off since suffering an injury in late 2017

Dean Saunders has reacted to reports which say John Stones will be allowed to leave Manchester City this summer, expressing his belief that mistakes may have cost the defender a future at the Etihad.

The Sun are reporting the story, claiming City are ready to sell Stones as he has fallen down Pep Guardiolas pecking order since the January signing of Aymeric Laporte, a £57m arrival from Athletic Club of Bilbao.

Stones had played just four Premier League games since the turn of the year, and though he started the campaign in excellent form, the mistakes which characterised his early stay with City have started to creep back into his game.

And Saunders feels these mistakes have caused Guardiola to reconsider Stones place in his plans for City moving forward.

The former Liverpool and Derby forward said on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “[Guardiolas] not been playing him, has he?

“Hes not been playing him and hes made a few mistakes. He made a few last season, and then had a good season [this time], but then made a couple of mistakes again.

“Whether the manager thinks: hes always going to make mistakes… I can get better, I dont know.

“Its a shame for England he cant get in Manchester Citys team.”
