Speaking in an interview with ESPN, Rafael revealed how Ronaldo spoke to him and his brother Fabio on the phone before they agreed to join United in February 2007.
The Brazilian twins were also wanted by Arsenal, but Rafael has revealed how a conversation with Ronaldo sealed their switch to Old Trafford.
[Cristiano] Ronaldo called us and asked us to join United, said Rafael, who now plays for Lyon.
He knew that Arsenal wanted us too, but we had given our word to United, and my parents said that was important.
Nani was also there and the Brazilian Anderson, of course.
Those three helped me, my brother and another Brazilian Rodrigo Possebon a lot because we couldnt speak any English.
Rafael also revealed his unconventional reaction to a dressing down from Ferguson after a match.
Fergie said a lot of good things about me, said Rafael.
Ill never forget that day. I felt that that I could play for Man United after that game.
Darren Fletcher came up to me – I love Fletcher, he was so helpful to me – and he said: Not bad for a first game, eh?
He always tried to help me. For example, I was still learning English and, in one game, I didnt play well.
Fergie was telling me off, and I was replying to him by smiling with my thumbs up because Brazilians do that.
I thought I was showing respect. Fletcher said to me: You dont do that.”
