Arsene Wenger has lifted the lid on his Arsenal exit, suggesting that he was sacked by the club rather than resigning.

Wenger, 68, will leave the club after 22 years in charge at the end of the season after his shock departure was announced last week.

It was initially suggested that the decision for Wenger to go was mutual between the club and manager.

However, that has been cast into doubt when the Frenchman revealed that the timing of the departure was not his decision.

Speaking on why he was leaving with a year left on his contract, Wenger said: "The timing was not my decision. The rest I have spoken about already."

The Gunners have a crucial Europa League semi-final first leg against Atletico Madrid on Thursday night and if they get through that it would leave Arsenal one win away from securing qualification for the 2018/19 Champions League.

This would arguably save their season despite the shocking stats behind their campaign which has seen them yet to register a point on the road in the Premier League in 2018.

But a Europa League win would make up for these woes that Wenger and the north London club has experienced this season.

He added: "Is there a perfect goodbye? I dont know. I just want to do as well as I can.

"This team, it is quality. I have seen these guys challenged mentally, always respond in the right way.

"This group of players deserve something special. I want to do it for them, to achieve something for them.

"My biggest satisfaction would be to do it with this group of players. I have seen what they have done this season, if we did win it, they would deserve it."
