Games Inbox: What’s the best video game Christmas makeover?
Merry Christmas everyone!

The evening Inbox enjoys the wit and wisdom of Captain Toad, as another reader gives their views on Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

PLEASE NOTE: The main GameCentral team will now be taking a break for Christmas and the new year, and will not return until Monday, January 8. However, there will be new features every day until then, including our top 20 of the year, review of 2017, and preview of 2018. Merry Christmas one and all, and thanks for all your support over the last year!

Putting the decorations up

It’s nice to see games adding a bit of festive content, this seems to have been lacking in recent years. I like it that Hitman has its Christmas hoarders contract, where you stop thieves stealing all the presents.

Admittedly I never noticed where the presents where that they were going to steal, as the culprits didn’t last long, the level though has had a nice Christmas makeover and since you can get it free at the moment, plus the Christmas contract, you should really give it ago (I played this on Xbox where it’s currently free for the Paris level and Christmas contract, maybe it’s the same on the PlayStation).

I Noticed GTA V also has festive updates online, things like this are a nice touch and the last time I remember the effort being put in was with the Dreamcast. Notably with Sonic Adventure getting a welcome Christmas makeover. Maybe others can recall other Christmas updates to add festivity to games currently or past.

Also want to mention that Sony kindly gave me the Frozen Wild add-on for Horizon Zero Dawn for free, this was especially good as I was about to buy it tomorrow. Awesome unexpected present and well happy, as it’s such a great game as well.

GC: That sort of thing happens with many games nowadays, particularly multiplayer titles.

Hopes transformed

Just a little thing I noticed on the Transformers fansites, that I’m sure GC will be interested in. It looks like Activision may have lost the licence, as all the games have suddenly been delisted on Steam and PSN. They’re still up on Xbox Live, so maybe it’s not as straightforward as that. But unless you’re on Xbox it’s now impossible to buy any of the games. So, so much for the digital-only future!

I actually thought a lot of the Activision games were very good, but I don’t think they ever put much effort into marketing them properly. Or even really knew what to do with them. Not sure who will pick the licence up next, if they will even bother, but I hope it’s not EA!

Both feet on the ground

The talk about Treasure Tracker recently in the Inbox reminded me of a funny thing he said in Super Mario Odyssey. I think it was basically, ‘I’m so glad you found me, I could jump for joy! But we all know that isn’t happening.’

Which made me lose it laughing a few seconds after when I got the joke. Whoever wrote that piece of dialogue at Nintendo gets a tip of the hat.

Unsolved mysteries

In GTA V there are mysterious drawings on a mountain wall laid out which looks like a puzzle. However, no one as of yet has figured it out.

I know I am just guessing here, but here goes. Each separate picture is a clue and you need to do these things in order is what I think it is. It most likely leads to a secret area that wouldn’t be found via normal means.

Also, one place worth looking at, even on GTA Online, is the underwater entrance into the lab that you get the perfume from in Michael’s mission. You can buy oxygen tanks and the mask from AmmuNation if you need it to enjoy exploring underwater.

It would be an interesting development if someone figured that wall drawing with symbols out on GTA V.

GC: The mystery has never been solved, but hackers have worked out most of what is involved.

This time I’ve got a code for Gears Of War, Gears Of War 2, Gears Of War 3, and Gears Of War: Judgment for GC to give away for the Xbox 360/One.

Plus, I have UV codes for The Purge and The Purge: Anarchy, plus a Mafia III family kickback code for Xbox One – giving three exclusive vehicles and weapons.

Where to start

GC, I am getting a Mini SNES for Christmas but want to know what game shall I play first, EarthBound or Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars?

Merry Christmas to all staff and readers.

PS: Looking forward to reading the top 20 games of 2017 early next year.

GC: Well… we probably would’ve started with an action game but Super Mario RPG is fairly short and a lot of fun.

A link to the past

Firstly, merry Xmas to everyone!

I’ve been reading the letters about The Last Jedi with interest and whilst I have only seen it once, and I don’t know how I’ll feel when I get around to seeing it again (although I doubt my opinion will change that much), I think that it’s a pretty decent film. But I don’t like it because it’s not true to the characters or the world in my opinion.

I agree with your assessment that it would have been better to leave the original’s cast more in the background, but I think I would have preferred them to have set it further in the future and have Luke and co. all be legendary heroes who are no longer around. You could then focus on the new characters and I think a lot more people would be happy with that. You can still have the links in maybe some small flashback roles for those guys, and their influence could be felt in different ways without them necessarily appearing or being present for the events of the films.

I think the problem in the end is that too much time had passed between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, so the story that you really want to see the gang in, what happened after the second Death Star was destroyed, can’t be realistically told due to the age of the actors. Still, what we’ve got is what we’ve got and maybe it’s just time for me to let go and realise that these films aren’t being made for me. They’re for my children who didn’t grow up wanting to be Luke or Han, and so don’t have such a hard time accepting their choices (which are not the choices I could ever see these characters making in a 1,000 years but whatever).

So as I’m a massive Star Wars fan and have been for many years I have been playing some classic Star Wars games that I haven’t played in a long time, long time thanks to GOG.com and it’s just made me realise how the DICE Battlefront games just seem to lack soul. It’s like you’re looking into a window, it’s all very pretty but there’s no substance, no attachment (there could have been but the campaign quickly dispensed with anything remotely interesting to tell a tired old story everyone has heard and seen millions of times before). Whilst I really felt like part of the Rebel Alliance/Galactic Empire in those games.

I’d love an X-Wing sequel or a remake, as that series is still home to some of the greatest games ever made, doubt we’ll ever be that lucky but I can dream.

PS: Mostly playing X-Wing at the moment to be followed by TIE Fighter, X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter, and X-Wing Alliance.

GC: We’d go along with most of that.

This week’s Hot Topic

As is tradition for the last week before Christmas, this weekend’s Inbox asks what was your biggest video game-related disappointment of 2017?

In the new year (once everyone’s had a chance to play their Christmas presents) we’ll run our regular reader’s poll for the best games of 2017, but for now we want to know what you think was the worst.

Your pick doesn’t have to be a complete disaster but what game were you at least disappointed with? Or perhaps there was some other news story, trend, or hardware release that you considered to be the low point of 2017 for games?
