Wayne Rooney must be restored to the Everton team, Tim Sherwood has told talkSPORT.

Rooney, who returned to his boyhood club from Manchester United amid much fanfare in the summer, has been left out of the Toffees’ last two Premier League matches by caretaker boss David Unsworth.

He did not even come off the bench in Sunday’s 4-1 humbling at Southampton, with Unsworth instead turning to youngster Ademola Lookman for inspiration.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on Tuesday, Sherwood said he cannot understand why Rooney – England’s record goalscorer – can’t get a game for an Everton side in such woeful form.

“Wayne will be scratching his head wondering why he can’t get in that side,” the former Aston Villa and Tottenham boss told talkSPORT.

“If he gets a chance to score, he scores. He has proved that over the years at the highest level and if you cut Wayne in half, he will bleed the colour blue.

“He is an Evertonian. He wants that club to stay in the division and you have just got to get him in the side, especially with the position they are in.

“When he first went in in there at the beginning of the season, I thought he looked really good and lean and sharp. He wanted to prove a point.

“He could have easily gone to China but he wanted to go back to his boyhood club, where has got unfinished business, and his coil is ready to go.”
