When the nights (and days) are cold and it gets dark at like 2pm, there’s pretty much nothing better than coming home to a nice warm house and a plate of delicious food.
While salads and smoothies are nice and all, they just don’t cut the mustard when you’ve just got promoted or had a lousy day.
Only comfort food, the king of all the foods, will suffice.
But not all comfort foods were created equal – there are some that are just more comforting than others.
Here’s a definitive ranking of our favourites:
28. Takeaway kebab
Kebabs are delicious, but that could just be the alcohol talking.
The jury’s still out on whether it’s acceptable to eat a kebab if you haven’t sunk seven pints or two bottles of wine.
Brilliant – but you can feasibly eat them pretty regularly, reducing their ‘comfort food treat’ value.
25. Beans on toast
Ridiculously cheap, and also one of your five-a-day. You just won at eating food.
24. Victoria Sponge
Tasty and posh.
23. Cream Tea
Even tastier as there’s more cream and even posher as you can call it High tea, if you want.
22. Shepherd’s or Cottage pie
Beef or lamb mince with baked mashed potato. What’s not to like?
21. Rice pudding
Eating the skin makes you a badass who doesn’t play by the rules.
Pasta could well be Italian for ‘fantastic’. Probably not though.
19. Pork scratching
Delicious morsels of pig skin and fat that sound disgusting but tastes like gold.
18. Bread and butter pudding
Proving the British hypothesis that everything goes well with cooked bread is fundamentally sound.
17. Chip butty
‘I know what this sandwich needs, more carbohydrates!’
16. Chinese takeaway
Probably pretty much nothing like real Chinese food from China, but still great anyway.
15. Bacon sarnie
Best with either Tommy K or brown sauce, or both if you’re a trendsetter.
14. Sticky toffee pudding
Traditional toffee fights back against upstart newcomer salted caramel.
13. Toad in the hole
Contains zero traces of toads, lots of traces of awesome.
12. Fried chicken
Massively increasing the revenue of the buttermilk industry.
11. Indian takeaway
Some like it hot. More popular than Stephen Fry.
10. Fish and chips
Best in newspaper, because ink tastes delicious apparently.
9. Ice cream
Eat it out of the tub, save the environment.
8. Bangers, beans and mash
School dinner nostalgia.
7. Cheese on toast
Proving that cheese…
…makes everything better…
Italian super-size cheese on toast.
3. Roast dinner
Would take the top spot, but it’s a faff to make unless you have your mum handy.
So popular there’s even a name for people who are addicted to it.
1. Full English breakfast
Lord and master of all the comfort foods, and best when eaten shamelessly for dinner as ‘Brinner’.
Mayonnaise, in this instance, is sacrilege.
