Sport24.co.za | Baines: Unsworth fully deserved win

Cape Town – Everton captain Leighton Baines believes their dramatic 3-2 win over Watford was the least that caretaker manager David Unsworth deserved.

The former Toffees defender has overseen four games at the helm since Ronald Koeman was sacked a fortnight ago – with the first three all resulting in defeats.

But Unsworth halted an eight-game winless streak in all competitions for the club as they came from two goals down to clinch victory at Goodison Park with a stoppage-time penalty from Baines.

The 32-year-old left-back has heaped praise on his compatriot for a job well done after stepping up from his role as Under-23 coach.

"It makes it extra special," Baines told Everton TV when asked about winning the match for Unsworth, which saw his side climb out of the relegation zone.

"He has been top drawer. I've loved the training sessions he's put on and the way he has conducted himself. His talk before the game was special.

"We would like to have given him more, and achieved better results – but we have got him a win, which he deserved, at the least."

The England international added: "We know we have good players, players that are better than the league table and our performances at times have been showing.

"It was nice to get a win. It was dramatic, so it feels great but it is nothing to get too carried away with. It is the type of win we should be getting here.

"It's a definite momentum builder, with the manner of it, the emotional roller coaster. I am sure it was a tough watch. It was really emotional and the type of game that can definitely give us something to build on."
