Juan Martin del Potro’s hopes of claiming a place at the ATP Tour finals are over after he was defeated in three sets by John Isner at the Paris Masters.

The Argentine would’ve claimed a spot at the season-ending event in London had he beaten the big serving American but was eventually beaten 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-4 at the quarter final stage.

Del Potro’s loss could ultimately turn out to be Isner’s gain, with the 32-year-old now just two victories away from securing a place at the Tour Finals which begin on November 12.

With Rafael Nadal now out of the tournament after he succumbed to a knee injury ahead of his own last eight meeting with Filip Krajinovic, Isner is now hopeful of completing an objective that was only a remote possibility at the start of the week.

He said: ‘It was very satisfying and I was confident going into this match,’ Isner said. ‘I took the court knowing that I’ve been playing pretty well.

‘I sort of escaped yesterday and was given some new life today and I think I took advantage of it.

‘Going into this tournament I wasn’t thinking about London at all. I was sort of thinking about what football games I’m going to watch back home when this tournament is over.

‘But now, certainly I’m not going to lie to you guys, it’s in my mind now. It would be great to qualify for that.’
