Bafana legend says Tau will be key

Cape Town – Former Bafana Bafana striker Phil Masinga believes the stage could be set for Percy Tau to mark himself down as a legend by helping secure 2018 Soccer World Cup qualification.

It was just over 20 years ago that Masinga netted a cracking goal against Congo-Brazzaville to book Bafana a first-ever World Cup appearance.

Now, with South Africa needing to beat Senegal both home and away to clinch a spot at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Masinga has challenged the diminutive Tau, who was key to Mamelodi Sundowns winning the Champions League last year, to emulate him.

"If Tau wants to make a name for himself, this is the time. He is a player with great potential. For me, he is going to be vital for us upfront," the former Jomo Cosmos, Sundowns and Leeds United striker told The Star.

"I'm in support of Bafana Bafana," the 48-year-old Masinga continued.

"I know that on their day they can deliver and I hope they do. I believe we can beat Senegal in both matches. They have to go out there and know that millions of South Africans are behind them."

Masinga, who netted 18 times in 58 internationals, says heart and desire will be crucial to South Africa's chances.

"We want to show character and a good attitude. They have to think positive. If it means breaking their own legs, they have to do that. We don't need to play good football in these matches but we need to show character and good mental attitude."

Kick-off in Friday's clash at the Peter Mokaba Stadium is at 19:00.
