Tottenham legend Clive Allen has told talkSPORT he would prefer Spurs to avoid the Europa League and focus on winning a domestic trophy this season if they are knocked out of the Champions League.
Spurs face PSV in a must-win game at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday night, having only claimed one point from their first three European fixtures this season.
Beating the Dutch team – who they drew 2-2 with in Holland – will restore Maurucio Pochettinos hopes of reaching the knock-out stages, ahead of a home clash against Inter Milan and a trip to the Nou Camp to face Barcelona.
But should Spurs fail to win, Allen says they would be better off ditching European football this season to focus on ending the clubs wait for silverware.
Speaking on Tuesdays Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, the White Hart Lane goal hero said: “The dilemma for Tottenham at the moment is that if they finish third they go into the Europa League.
“Obviously theres a Champions League place at stake if they win, but you could be going in there with Chelsea and Arsenal who are very strong.
“So I would honestly prefer they end up bottom of the group, dont go into the Europa League and have a full tilt at a top four place in the Premier League and an attack on the cups.
“Theyre in the League Cup, theyre in the FA Cup, theres a real chance to win silverware there.”
