Weekend Hot Topic, part 1: Video games youve never played before

The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild – not quite tempting enough?

GameCentral readers name the games theyve never played but always wanted to, from Total War to Pokémon.

The subject for this weeks Hot Topic was suggested by reader Rich, who asked whether it was not owning the right hardware that kept you from playing a game or some other reason – like not having enough time or worrying you wouldnt be good at it.

Time was a major factor for many of the responses, as well as the money and burden of owning too many consoles at once – especially given what that would do for your backlog.

Drawing the line

I can already imagine people shaking their heads in disbelief but I have never played a Mario or Zelda game. I was going to say Ive never played any Nintendo game but that would be a lie: I have played Mario Kart a few times and probably some other multiplayer games that Ive forgotten. But I have definitely never owned a Nintendo console and have no real plans too.

Im not a hater or anything but I already have two consoles and a PC and not enough time to devote to them, and I will be honest the general Nintendo style does not really appeal to me. Not enough that I wouldnt play the games if the chance arose but also not enough to spend £300 for the console and games.

I think Zelda would interest me more than Mario and I have to admit that Breath Of The Wild was particularly tempting for me. Thats probably the closest Ive come to actually getting a console but in the end I never quite got round to it. I know a mate with one so maybe Ill try and borrow his for a week, but since the game is so long Im not sure hed be up for it. Although that in itself does speak well of the game I guess.

Sooner or later

It might take me a while but I usually get around to playing at least one game from a long running series eventually, especially if it has received critical acclaim. At present I am playing the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy on Switch. This is my first extended experience with the series and I am enjoying it so far. (I had played the level in Uncharted 4 beforehand but that was pretty much it).

Forza Motorsport is probably the biggest current franchise I have not played a game from. I tend not to have the patience for serious racing games but I enjoy the occasional arcade racer and think I would like the Horizon sub-series. Buying an Xbox One for a Forza game is too much of a risk for me though.

I have also heard lots of good things about the Japanese role-playing series Suikoden, which seems to be a fan favourite. Therefore I would like to try one of those games at some point too but it appears the series has been abandoned now and it is unlikely any of the games will be remade for current hardware.

GC: Suikoden II is the standout of the series and its available for just a few pounds on the PlayStation Store.

Many before the one

I have always wanted to get into a good role-playing game, the likes of The Witcher 3 or Fallout, but what puts me is the length of time you need to put into these games. When I was young and had all the time in the world I would be more inclined to, but if I was to play a role-playing game these days I could but it would take me at least three months to get through it and no matter how good the game would be, I would rather play more shorter experiences than just one game over the same period.

Another question you asked as part of this Hot Topic was if you had ever bought a console or PC just to play one game and I can say I have. Around two years ago I remember just browsing through my Facebook news feed and saw an advert trailer for Planet Coaster and thought it looked incredible, needless to say that same day I was researching PC components and whether I should build a PC or buy one.

I dont regret it as it is a great game and I have played lots of other games on my PC too, for a lot cheaper than their console counterparts. There is also the abundance of great PC indie games I have played too.

No time like the present

For some reason Ive never played a Hitman game, even though Ive always wanted to. I think its because I dont really like stealth games, especially Metal Gear, and yet whenever I read about Hitman it sounds really good with the open world levels and the way theres no set solution or anything.

I think the fact that the last lot was episodic put me of that, as I really didnt like the idea and then I mustve missed when it came out in a boxed set. Just writing this is making me think I should probably get that, as I bet its cheap. So I think Ill try that and then make a proper effort to get the sequel if I do end up liking it.

So, thanks Hot Topic! Youve actually convinced to get around to it (spoiler: I bet I forget).

Admiring from afar

Dark Souls is probably the game that best fits this description for me. I love the idea of it, especially the Lovecraftian Bloodborne, but I am nowhere near good enough at these games and the short time Ive spent on them has proven that my initial assumptions to that fact are true.

But Im not one of those people that thinks it should have an easy mode or anything. I actually admire the fact that its so difficult and refuses to change, even though that would undoubtedly make it more popular.

But I have to face the fact that Im never going to be able to play them myself. Thats okay though, Ive watched lots of Lets Play videos and the liked and theyve only enhanced my impression of the games. The idea that the new ninja one is even harder than usual is pretty terrifying though, I guess thats another one Im only going to watch and not play.

Do not pass GO

Ive never played a Pokémon game, not even GO. I wasnt the right age (and didnt have a Game Boy) when they first came out and I was in that too cool for kiddy stuff phase while they had their first big push. Then when Pokémon GO came out we had one of the meeting spots (I forget what theyre called) right outside our offices and it just looked so crazy to see everyone there, like some weird kind of mob madness.

In the back of my head I do feel that I probably would enjoy it, since I have liked other Japanese role-players, but since I dont have a Switch I cant play the new ones. If I had the right hardware I definitely would give it a try, but GO doesnt sound appealing because its not a real game.

One at a time

Every time Total War comes up, like your recent preview of the Chinese one, I wish I had a powerful gaming PC. Ive never played the series but it sounds like something I would love. But for me I cannot justify buying anything for just one game. Ive never done that with consoles and a PC would be even more expensive. Especially as it doesnt really have any other exclusives.

I see a lot of people right in about having problems with backlogs but for me I try to make sure I have only one console per generation, that way I can make sure things dont get too out of hand. Ive rarely got more than two or three games on the go at once and that suits me just right. The only exception is I will often buy a Nintendo console at the end of a generation to see what Ive missed. Their games are great but their consoles are useless if you only want to have one.

I imagine a lot of people will be thinking that I should just get a PC and have that as my main formats, but I would really miss the Sony exclusives, especially the recent ones on the PlayStation 4. It is a temptation though hand I may consider it depending on how the next gen goes, as I certainly havent bought a PS4 Pro. If I do then Total War: Three Kingdoms would definitely be the first game I get.
