Pokemon Nintendo Switch news: New leaks suggest release date announcement coming SOON?

Another week, another set of Pokemon rumours.

It's already been confirmed by Nintendo that the company is working on a Nintendo Switch version of the popular RPG series, but other than that, very little is officially known about the project.

A series of rumours have suggested we'll see the game released this year, that it'll be a reboot of some kind, and that we'll potentially be seeing the Pokemon rendered in a whole new engine (and potentially looking a whole lot better).

You can read a round-up of those rumours here.

There are some new rumours to add fuel to the Pokemon Switch fire, however.

First up, the owner of the online Pokemon store has revealed a new line of merchandise is due to be revealed in the next six weeks.

There is a slot beside series mainstay Eevee that has yet to be revealed, prompting many to believe it'll be a new 'Eeveelution', suggesting a set of new Pokemon may be about to be revealed.

The figures on show also contain the Legendary Pokemon Lugia, that hasn't received much attention of late – however another leak suggests the Pokemon might get a new form soon.

Nintendo Switch 2018: Rumoured and confirmed games coming to the console

Nintendo Switch had a great first year, full of exclusives and third party games. Here's a few more rumoured games supposedly coming to the console in 2018 and beyond. PLUS, some games we know are coming in the months ahead.

Japanese magazine Corocoro has confirmed a new version of Lugia will be distributed to players that pre-book tickets to new Pokemon movie 'Everybody's Story'.

In a tweet from Pokemon site Serebii, we can see that the new Lugia will be called Wind Lugia – suggesting it'll be a whole new forme of the Pokemon.

If that is the case, it could mean we'll see a hint of new Pokemon or a new Pokemon game suggested during the reveal of the new forme.

It may also just be a film tie-in, but that remains to be seen. There's still one Pokemon, Zeraora, that has yet to be formally revealed from this generation, and until Game Freak / Nintendo pulls back the curtain on that, we may not see anything formally revealed about the new Switch game.

Either way, the new merch line is due to be officially announced in six weeks – we should be expecting some Pokemon-based news before then.

Pokemon news has been announced in dedicated Pokemon Directs lately, so we can likely expect Nintendo to announce news about the game before E3 this year.

It's worth noting that Nintendo also recently de-listed an old Pokemon Direct from its Youtube channel – something it did a few weeks before the Direct that announced Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

This could just be a coincidence, but we'll update you as soon as anything is announced.

These leaks comes as new rumours have surfaced about Pokemon for Nintendo Switch.

The newest set of rumours come from a trusted source in the Pokemon community, known as Lavandula.

The community member – who is known for not sharing information irresponsibly – shared information from a Chinese source that claims to be close to the Pokemon project, stating the Switch version of the game will be a 'reboot' for the series.

"Chinese Riddler openly posted that the Pokemon Switch title will be a reboot of the franchise," reads a tweet revealing the origin of the information. "However, the thread is quickly deleted."

It's worth bearing in mind that 'reboot' in this sense doesn't mean a total withdrawal from the series so far: it's likely referring to a 'soft' reboot, which Pokemon saw with Generation 5 (Black & White), which will rethink some mechanics, set a core 151 monsters and revolve around a single, well-defined map.

There is still no information solidly available for the game, so take these rumours with a pinch of salt. There is online chatter that these games will go back to the original 151 Pokemon, and be set in the first region, Kanto. None of this has been confirmed, however.

Pokemon Nintendo Switch – What we know so far

A new Pokemon game is due to release on the Nintendo Switch – we know that for certain.

But the release date has been kept a secret by publisher Nintendo and developer Game Freak.

New comments from staffers close to the series suggest Nintendo's successful new console could see the highly-anticipated Pokemon game release this year, however.

Speaking to Japanese magazine Famitsu (with quotes via GoNintendo), Game Freak designer Kazumasa Iwao has stated that the company intends to 'hype up' the long-running franchise in 2018.

His quote to the magazine reads:

“Happy New Year. In 2017 we were able to release Pokemon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon, and we express our deep gratitude to everyone who has been playing it. In 2018 we will still continue to hype up Pokemon, so please look forward to it.”
