‘Magnificent’ Alexis Sanchez needs time to adapt to Manchester United’s style, Jordi Cruyff tells talkSPORT
Alexis Sanchez is a ‘magnificent player’ who just needs time to adapt to his new role at Manchester United, Jordi Cruyff has told talkSPORT.
The Chilean has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford since his arrival from Arsenal in January, scoring just one goal.
Fans have been disappointed by his performances, and he came under fire from Manchester United legends for his display in Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat to Sevilla as the Red Devils crashed out of the Champions League.
Sanchez enjoyed a starring role at Arsenal and was one of the Premier League’s top performers in the three and a half seasons he spent with the Gunners.
At United, though, he has a less prominent role and has been less effective on the wing compared to his more advanced position at the Emirates.
But former Man United midfielder Jordi Cruyff, son of Dutch legend Johan, believes he just needs time to settle at his new club and suggested the forward should be rested to help him rediscover his best form.
Speaking to talkSPORT’s Jim White, he said: “It shouldn’t be a problem to leave a player out of the team. Messi sits on the bench now and then for Barcelona, not too often but it does happen.
“Sometimes it’s a question of adaptation. Sometimes you have these adaptation issues.
“He came to the club with a fanfare and on a lot of money to a very big club. It takes some time to adapt.
“His quality is undoubtable and there is also no doubt that if he becomes available again 50 clubs are going to be after him.
“I really think he’s a great addition to the Man United squad and he signed on a long-term contract, so you’ve got to give these kind of players some time to adapt.
“With Alexis Sanchez it’s not a question of ‘if’ and ‘but’, it’s a question of when it’s all going to come together, because he’s a magnificent player.”
