Another week has gone by in the world of football, and there’s yet more controversy with VAR.
In the opening minutes of Tottenham’s replay with Rochdale, Erik Lamela thought he had scored for the hosts.
However, despite seemingly tapping in a legitimate goal, the Argentine looked on in disbelief as referee Paul Tierney consulted the television officials and duly chalked the goal off.
Fernando Llorente was adjudged to have fouled a Rochdale player in the build-up, and the goal was ruled out.
Shortly after, Tottenham were correctly awarded a penalty. But only after much deliberation as fans sat in the Arctic conditions awaiting the decision.
It wasn’t just Tottenham fans who were upset by the influence of technology, with fans of numerous different clubs voicing their concern at the way technology was influencing the game.
