Having a picnic at the edge of a cracked cliff might not be the best idea
Sometimes you just need your own privacy.
And other times you find yourself literally at the edge of a cliff that might give way at any point, massively affecting the picnic you were tucking into by yourself.
That’s what a photographer found when he was taking a walk at Seaford Head in East Sussex and spotted a woman eating lunch on a very dangerous cliff.
Sid Saunders was horrified to see the woman casually tucking into some oranges as she sat atop very unstable rocks which had a visibly huge crack on the side.
The 74-year-old photographer, who lives in Hastings, has warned people to observe warning signals and stay safe around the area.
‘I was enjoying my walk and I watched a young woman walk pass the metal post warning people off the cliff edge and the possibility of it being unstable,’ the photographer said.
‘I was some way from her, but when I looked back I could see, to my horror, she was sitting eating and drinking on a large crack in the chalk.
‘I started to walk back up to warn her but thankfully she got up and walked away in another direction.
‘If you look close you can see the warning marker post that she ignored.’
Coastguard Maritime Commander, Mark Rodway added: ‘We are warning beach goers and coastal walkers to exercise caution in the Seaford cliffs area and keep away from the areas that have now been cordoned off.
‘It’s impossible to predict when the next piece might fall or how big it will be. It’s very clear that cliffs are unstable in places and we really can’t stress enough how important it is to keep back from the edge.
‘There is no “safe” place to be.
‘Don’t be tempted to go and investigate recent cracks or falls and don’t risk going to the edge to get a dramatic photo.’
He also warned that ‘selfie culture’ is posing a threat as people vie for dramatic pictures, often at dangerous heights.
While it looks like the woman was unaware of the potentially life-threatening cliff edge, it doesn’t seem like she had intentionally put herself at risk.
Anyone who’s looking for a cool picture, don’t put yourself and/or others at risk just for Instagram likes.
