If Antonio Conte loses his job before the end of the season, Chelsea could appoint Marco Silva in a caretaker capacity.

The Blues’ current manager is under pressure and although the Stamford Bridge board would prefer to wait until the end of the season to make a change, continued poor results could force their hand, according to The Times.

Leading candidates for the role on a permanent basis, including Luis Enrique, are not keen on the idea of taking a job mid-season and Silva is believed to have impressed enough during his time at Watford despite his sacking.

As Matt Hughes writes, the 40-year-old is "renowned for being an impact manager who can galvanise underperforming players however, and, given his availability and fierce ambition, would relish the chance to restore his reputation, even in a short-term appointment."

The Portuguese coach raised his stock considerably at Hull where he was appointed in January 2017 and although he was unable to avoid relegation he recorded a credible six wins in the Premier League.
