Antonio Conte provides excuse for struggling Chelsea star Tiemoue Bakayoko
Antonio Conte has leapt to the defence of struggling Chelsea star Tiemoue Bakayoko.
The France international was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in the space of eight first half minutes during Monday’s calamitous 4-1 defeat at Watford.
Bakayoko was subjected to abuse from his own fans as he trudged down the tunnel, capping what has been a difficult start to life in the Premier League.
The 22-year-old was signed for £35million in the summer as a direct replacement for Nemanja Matic, who was sold to Manchester United against Conte’s will, but has struggled to cope with the rigours of English football.
‘For sure he is a young player. Last season he won the title in France with Monaco, to arrive in this league and adapt very quickly is not simple,’ said Conte.
‘But my task is to help him but every single player as well.’
Chelsea have won only two of their last 10 games in all competitions and Conte insists responsibility must be divided if his side are to salvage their season.
We have to try to stop this bad run and get three points against West Brom. It won’t be easy, the confidence is not high but we have to trust in our work and football.
‘I think that in every situation you have to divide the situation, positive and negative,’ he added.
‘When you have this period with poor results you have to divide the responsibility, me, the players and the club.’
